Guido Rianna

Director of the Soil and Water Systems Division at the CMCC Foundation – Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change

Guido Rianna is Director of the Soil and Water Systems Division at the CMCC Foundation – Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change, where he has worked since 2012. His research focuses on the interactions between atmospheric forcing and the Earth critical zone with particular attention to the development of models and decision-support tools for climate adaptation and sustainable management of water resources. He has a consolidated expertise in climate adaptation engineering with the ambition of updating tools and regulations of the civil engineering to properly address climate change related issues. He has coordinated and contributed to numerous European and national research projects addressing the impacts of climate extremes on natural and human systems, the integration of technological and nature-based solutions, and the design of strategies for water resilience. He was co-leader of the section of the European Climate Risk Assessment on the Built Environment.

Guido Rianna acted as scientific advisor to the Italian National Adaptation Plan and to the European Environment Agency, and he is an expert member of the EU panel for technical guidance on adapting buildings to climate change. He is also editor for Landslides (Springer).

He holds a PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering and a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering for Sustainable Development, both from the University of Naples “Federico II”. His publication record includes more than sixty scientific papers on climate impacts, hydrological processes, built environment, and slope stability.
