Technical visits

The International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory is one of the main international research centres dedicated to nanoscience.

Technical visit to INL

The Laboratory is an intergovernmental organization founded in 2005 upon a joint agreement between Portugal and Spain. Today, it houses a multicultural community of more than 400 researchers from 30 nationalities with various scientific backgrounds.

Established in 2005, the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL) is a collaborative research and technology organisation founded by the governments of Spain and Portugal. Headquartered in Braga, northern Portugal, INL operates within an international legal framework to conduct interdisciplinary research and implement nanotechnologies for the benefit of society. INL focuses on strategic research areas that deepen our understanding of fundamental phenomena, serving as the basis for the development of innovative technologies. By progressing through the innovation pipeline, these technologies aim to address current global challenges, aligning with the priorities outlined in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Key areas include clean water, clean energy, zero hunger, good health, and overall well-being. INL’s mission is two-fold: to carry out excellent research in nanotechnology, and to engage with society by means of technology transfer and public outreach. This twin approach guides the organisation to navigate the unknown universe of science, and to identify new research areas at the intersection of established knowledge fields. The overarching objective is to advance research anchored in nanotechnology towards new science and novel methodologies, and to devise nanotechnologybased solutions, in the physical and human environments, mediated by cutting-edge research in information and communication technologies.

Meeting point: The meeting point will be the main entrance of INL (the entrance facing Parque Da Rodovia).

Technical visit to Braga Municipal Stadium

The Municipal Stadium of Braga is one of the most iconic works of sports-related architecture and engineering. Built for Euro 2004, where it hosted two group-stage matches, it remains one of the most striking stadiums in both national and international football.

Carved into an old quarry and surrounded by a uniquely scenic landscape, the stadium stands out for its distinctive design, featuring only two stands. This layout ensures that every spectator enjoys an exceptional view of the sporting event. Its roof, whose installation proved to be the greatest challenge of the entire project, was inspired by the suspension bridges built by the Inca civilisation in Peru and is supported by steel cables spaced 3.75 metres apart.

Another remarkable feature is the existence of two underground levels beneath the pitch: one allowing spectators to move easily between the stands, and another housing an underground car park.

In 2011, architect Eduardo Souto de Moura received the Pritzker Prize, the highest international distinction in architecture. The award was presented in Washington, in the United States, during a ceremony in which the stadium was highlighted by the jury and praised by then-President Barack Obama.

Meeting point: The meeting point will be the main entrance of Forum Braga

Meeting time: 10:20am

Cost: this visit has a cost of 20,00€

The visit includes the ticket entry, tour around the stadium with a English speaking guide and bus.
